Mangemangeroa bridges suburbia and rural countryside. At high or low tide the view from the top of the ridge down the valley to the estuary is quite spectacular.
Mangemangeroa Walkway main entrance is at 108 Somerville Road, Howick. This itinerary is for the north eastern route to Shelly Park.
The Mangemangeroa Valley has beautiful lookouts, and is steeped in Maori and early European history. The walkway runs through native bush, past mudflats, some boardwalk tracks, some parts can be muddy with some hilly farmland often dotted with cows. There is also some coastal hill climbing, and a steep staircase if you wish to leave at the Shelly Park Cruising Club. Ferries used to manoeuvre through the creek but now it’s home to mangroves, crabs and hosts of birds.
Along the walk you will see labels indicating the types of native trees that abound. You will see and hear local birds and perhaps even some quail along the way.
Our Tip:
This walk requires good fitness and sensible shoes as there are steep areas and many steps. Carpark on Sommerville Road.
