A Weekend Walk

Itinerary - a Weekend Walk

East Auckland has an array of amazing walks through the region – some more challenging than others.

Ideas for exploring our diverse region

The Pakuranga Rotary Walkway extends from Panmure Bridge for approx. 10 kms to Half Moon Bay Marina where you can enjoy a coffee or bite to eat.  This is easy and very scenic walking along the Tamaki Estuary on paths and some boardwalks – popular with families.

For something more rugged the Mangemangeroa Reserve provides spectacular views from high hills but also gravel paths that take you down to the River and mangroves with some steep stairs and boardwalks.  The amazing forest of indigenous trees cuts out suburban noise and you can be forgiven for thinking you are far from civilization.

Travelling a bit further out is the Pine Harbour/Beachlands trail which extends to Te Puru Park and links to the Omana Regional Park, where you can enjoy small sandy coves and safe swimming.   During November/December the indigenous Pohutukawa trees proudly display their red flowers which give this coastline its name – the Pohutukawa Coast.

Further around the coastline is Duder Regional Park.  Here are options of being reasonably easy or, should you choose to do some walking up through fields and out to the far point, more challenging.  Being truly rural the views from Duder across the Hauraki Gulf to Waiheke and other islands are absolutely amazing.  Heading further around the coast is Waitawa Regional Park, an equally stunning place to explore, and then inland to Hunua with its waterfall, trails and paths.

The choice is not easy, and there is plenty of walking to be enjoyed, and best to wear suitable footwear and take a snack and water.
